What is an IP address?

It is the address other computers use to reach yours. Every request you make carries it, which is how the reply finds its way back. Your network operator assigns it to your connection, not to you.

Why does my IP address keep changing?

Most home connections draw an address from a shared pool, so it can change when your router restarts or your operator rotates its allocation. Mobile connections change more often still. An address that was yours last month may belong to someone else today, which is why an old record of one says very little about who holds it now.

How accurate is IP geolocation?

City level at best, and often only country level. An address is placed by where its block is registered and routed, not by any signal from your device, so the figure above comes with a radius. It is not a street address and cannot be used as one. Mobile and satellite connections are routinely placed hundreds of kilometres from the person using them.

What is the difference between a public and a private IP address?

The address on this page is your public one, the address the rest of the internet sees. Inside your home or office your devices also hold private addresses, usually starting 192.168 or 10., which are reused on every network in the world and mean nothing outside your own.

What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?

IPv4 addresses are the familiar four numbers, and there are not enough of them left, so IPv6 was introduced with a vastly larger space. Many connections now hold both, and you may see a different address here depending on which one your browser used.

Can I hide my IP address?

A VPN or proxy replaces the address sites see with one belonging to the service you route through. That hides your own address from the site, and gives the service the same view of your traffic instead. This page reports when an address belongs to a VPN, proxy or hosting network, which is how sites detect the same thing.
